It was a proud moment for Fijian youth Sagufta Salma Janif to scoop the 2020 Commonwealth Youth Award for the Pacific region in London, England, on Wednesday.

She was among three other young people who won Commonwealth Youth Awards for innovative projects that are delivering sustainable development in their regions.

The four winners each received a trophy and £3000 (F $8542.31) to expand the scope of their projects.

Sagufta is the founder of “The Fusion Hub”; a social enterprise focused on addressing a lack of access to proper waste disposal methods in remote islands by upcycling waste materials.

Her enterprise mainly employs single mothers.

Ms Janif said receiving the award still felt unreal and she was still trying to process every bit of it.

“This award is proof that all young people in the Pacific already are aware of the solutions and not just the problems and all we need from our world leaders is to listen to us and support us in all our efforts,” Ms Janif said.

“This award will help me create more awareness around sustainable living and empower more women to work in a field that is largely dominated by men.

“I would just like to thank the Commonwealth for recognising our efforts as the youth of this world and giving us all the importance we deserve for the work we are doing.”

Ms Janif said she believed in creating positive impacts in anything and everything she did.

Her advice to youths: “If you have already taken a step then stay committed. It will be challenging sometimes but giving up is not an option.”

The awards recognise contributions by young people whose ventures are helping their countries achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
