The China Lions are looking forward to a physical match against the Fijian Latui today.

James Little, cousin of former national first five –eighth Nicky Little and one of the two Fijians in side, is looking forward to the rumble in Laucala in round one of the Global Rapid Rugby competition.

The China Lions squad are made up predominantly of Bay of Plenty players who play in New Zealand’s Mitre 10 Cup competition.

The other Fijian is prop Haeriti Hetet, whose father is from Lau.

“We know they are going to come hard as they always do and we should be ready for the challenge,”Little said.

He would like to follow into the footsteps of his cousin, Nicky, if given a chance to represent Fiji.

“That’s the dream but I’ll keep playing my rugby in New Zealand and hopefully Fijian coaches will select me and play for Fiji in future.”

Lions coach Mike Rodgers does not know much about the Latui but expects a hard game.

“It’s pretty unpredictable and it’s going to be exciting,”Rodgers said.

With a mixture of Pacific island players in the side, Rodgers said his side were fortunate to have a diverse mix.

“If you look across NZ rugby a lot of athletes come from the Pacific islands so we are really fortunate that we got Fijians, Samoans and Tongans players.”

The China Lions are primarily based in New Zealand and have a few Chinese players on the team.

Blake on Latui

Lions captain Hugh Blake said: “We know Fijians are good rugby players. I think it’s really going to be a tough match.

“We need to be tactical in our kicking and give our best shot.”

The Lions meet the Fijian Latui at 6:15pm today at the ANZ Stadium.
