Top Nasinu Rugby Union club Newtown Kidos are ready to play in the 44th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament that gets underway at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, this weekend.

This is the club of Olympian and current World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year. Jerry Tuwai.

This is the third year the Newtown Kidos are participating in the tournament.

Club manager Aliki Bia said preparations have been going well.

“We started training last year but we had a break during Christmas and New Year’s Day but resumed training last month,” he said.

Bia said there were some tournaments they had planned to play in but later it was called off due to the measles outbreak in the country.

The tournaments they’ve played in were the Matainasau 7s where they reached the Cup semifinals before they went on to win the Wailoku 7s tournament.

Even though the club had financial difficulties, Bia says, that did not stop them from participating in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.

He said they are also hopeful of securing a major sponsor.

Currently, there are 20 players training, he says, they are going to finalise the final 15 players sometimes this week.

Bia said majority of the players are unemployed and they are trying to help them reach national level.

“The players are physically, mentally and spiritually fit.

“These boys are determined to prove themselves at the Marist 7s tournament.”

He said apart from Tuwai, they have some former players who are now playing abroad.

But for this weekend, their key players are Malakai Tobau, Joeli Ravulala and Jale Nabuta.
