Nadera Homes Subjected To Sewage During Floods

“It is unsafe and unhygienic. Children are being subjected to this. I urge the authorities responsible to check on the problem. The blocked drain near the school is also a concern. What happens is children play in the flooded water,” he said.

More than 40 homes in Malolo Settlement in Nadera are being subjected to sewage, which overflows from a chamber every time there is heavy rain.

The drain near the chamber is also blocked, which also adds to the flooding problem.

The chamber and the blocked drain are located at the back of the Nadera Rishikul Primary School in Kuluvutu Street off Reba Circle.

School manager Vijay Nair is concerned that children, who use the back entrance, are wading through water filled with faeces.

“It is unsafe and unhygienic. Children are being subjected to this. I urge the authorities responsible to check on the problem. The blocked drain near the school is also a concern. What happens is children play in the flooded water,” he said.

Malolo settlement resident Mohammed Sharif said they had raised the issue with appropriate authorities, but no action had been taken.

“It is bad that we have to deal with dirty water going under our homes. It makes life very hard for us,” he said.

“It is sewage so I don’t have to say much on how bad it is.”

Another resident Savita Jattan said her biggest concern was the drain in front of her home.

“Because there is blockage near the school, dirty water remains in the drain. I fear it is breeding germs and mosquitoes,” she said.

Nasinu Town Council said they had issued a notice to the people responsible for putting the culvert. Mr Nair said he had brought council workers last week, but not much was cleared.

Water Authority of Fiji acting team leader corporate communication Peni Shute said WAF would take a look at the chamber.
