Expect a Huge Decrease In Fuel Prices, Consumers Told

Fijians can expect a huge reduction in fuel prices soon, says the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC).

And those who have stocked up this past two days will miss out, according to FCCC chief executive officer, Joel Abraham.

Mr Abraham made the comment after several petrol stations around the country reported people stocking up on fuel as they went into panic mode on Thursday. The reaction comes after Fiji confirmed its first case of COVID-19 infection.

Mr Abraham said people had stocked up on fuel for fear of Fiji going into a lockdown.

“There were fuel stations with long lines. In service stations people were waiting to stock up because they said Fiji was going into a lockdown and you need to fuel up,” Mr Abraham said.

“Firstly, if you’re going into a lockdown where will you be driving? Why do you need to refuel?”

Mr Abraham said they would be making an announcement soon.

“There will be a major reduction in fuel prices. I’m not talking about a minor reduction. All prices are reducing by more than 10 cents.

“And of course, we are working on that to look at passing the reduction through to consumers, but for everybody that went in and lined up today they’re going to miss out on that because they’ve gone and fuelled up.”
