Fever clinics have been established by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in its bid to identify people who might be living with the Coronavirus COVID-19 symptoms.

According to Chief Medical Adviser, Dr Jemesa Tudravu, this was the latest COVID-19 response effort undertaken by the ministry.

“The clinic has been set up and we have two of these in Lautoka that are now operational at the moment and we intend to increase this number as well as roll it out to the rest of the country,” Dr Tudravu said.

“The purpose of the fever clinic is just to increase our capability to be able to identify people who have potential, and it certainly allows more access for members of the public to be able to get to a facility where a health staff is without having to visit the hospital,” he said.

“At the clinic we will have a medical professional to check and test them to confirm that they do not have the disease.”

Dr Tudravu said only people with symptoms were anticipated to be checked at the fever clinics.

Hotline contacts

Head of Health Protection, Dr Aalisha Sahukhan, said the hotline contact numbers were set up in order to pick up cases early.

“They are meant for people who are suspected to have COVID-19, people who have a travel history, those who have travelled outside of Fiji and have respiratory symptoms cough, fever, shortness of breath.

“It’s meant to really reduce the amount of people who are just turning up at our health centres and are possible suspected cases.

“The danger in that is if you turn up at any Health Centre and you have symptoms and it turns out to be a confirmed case you could actually spread it to other people.

“That’s what the hotlines are set up for.”
