The Vodafone Fijian Under-20 head coach Kele Leawere said the cancellation of the World Rugby U20 Championship due to coronavirus is something that is beyond their control.

The U20 Championship was to be hosted in Italy in late June.

In a statement yesterday World Rugby stated the cancellation came after detailed consultation with the Federazione Italiana Rugby.

Speaking to SUNsports, Leawere says although it was disheartening, the decision was for the good of all.

“A bit disappointed that the tournament is cancelled but it is beyond our control,” he said. “At the moment the priority is that we look after the lives of the players which is important but at the same time we know we have to take heed of the cancellation of the tournament.”

While some of the players on his side may not be eligible if the championship is to be held next year, Leawere urged the players not to lose hope.

WARRIORS NEXT

“It’s not the end of the road. For those who are not going to under-20, the programme from next year is the Warriors and the Drua.”

The former Flying Fijians lock forward has asked players to do their individual training with the assistance of the High Performance Unit.

“The Fiji Rugby Union high performance unit has sent out videos on training that could be done indoors, so it is important to keep themselves fit.”

Leawere is also the Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors head coach.
