Pharmacies Face Difficulties In Getting Supplies From Lautoka

The Pharmaceutical sector in Fiji are facing difficulties in meeting the demands for medical supplies.

This comes after Government has restricted movement in and out of Lautoka, where most of the pharmacies major wholesalers are based.

Lautoka became a confined area after Government confirmed three cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Fiji.

Fiji Pharmaceutical Society president Reenal Chand said most pharmacies in Suva rely on supplies from wholesalers in Lautoka.

“There are three major suppliers to pharmaceuticals in Suva and they are Makans Drugs, Excel Distributors, Ray Pharmaceuticals.

“We are not able to get some medications from Lautoka but we are contacting the Police to see if we can we get our medical supplies through,” he said.

Mr Chand said other items that were in high demand in Pharmacies were cleaning supplies, disinfectants, paracetamol, Vitamin C supplements etc.

He said most pharmacies have run out of hand sanitiser gels and face masks and have begun rationing medicines.

Rationing

“We are managing our stock, limiting supplies to customers so that we do not give it all at once.

“Rationing has always been plan A from the beginning.

“We have made restrictions on certain items such as Panadol, we only allow one or two packets depending on the packet size.

“For expensive medications, we are only allowed to give for a one month supply at a time.”

Panic buying

Mr Chand said since news of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was announced Thursday, pharmacies saw a huge influx of people coming to purchase medications.

“At the same time people across the country were panic buying.

“We just need to follow instructions from Government and the Ministry of health, we should be able to maintain some form of normality,” he said.
