The University of Fiji has apologised to the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, on behalf of its Vice Chancellor, Sushila Chang, who was identified as one of the people who snuck out of Lautoka.

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho said Professor Chang was alleged to have breached the borders of the Lautoka confined area and then boarded a flight to Sydney last Friday.

University Pro Vice Chancellor Kamlesh Arya said the citation was a huge embarrassment for the University of Fiji as its top Executive is found to have breached a lawful order by the State.

“The University of Fiji Council tenders it’s apology to the Prime Minister and the nation for this wanton behaviour of its Vice-Chancellor,” he said.

“The breach of the order by the Vice Chancellor is seen as a serious oversight and the Council is contemplating serious disciplinary actions against Professor Chang as the University has been brought to unprecedented public ridicule.”

Driver in custody

Police had taken into custody the driver who allegedly fixed the movement of Ms Chang and were looking to question her personal assistant who the Police believed was also involved.

Police have charged 12 people for violating border protection measures.
