Fijian-born US citizen, Setareki Qasevakatini, is one of the many to shorten his holiday here but has promised to return once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Mr Qasevakatini was one of the 307 passengers to depart on Fiji Airways bound for Los Angeles on Monday night.

This was the last Fiji-Los Angeles flight until the end of May.  It comes after  Government, last week, cut 95 per cent of its international flight routes in light of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic not only in Fiji but the rest of the world.

This move makes it the biggest stringent scale back in the airline’s 68-year history.

Mr Qasevakatini, 40, a former high school teacher, received his US Green Card a decade ago and is based in Seattle, where a large number of former Fijian citizens are.

“I am going back to be with my family,” he said.

“It is better to show our submission to those in authority.”

Mr Qasevakatini came on March 3 and was expected to depart on April 7.

Out of Auckland

On the Fiji Airways Auckland-Nadi flight was Fiji Airports manager Airport Landside Operations and Customer Services, Joe Gray.

Mr Gray, who has returned from undergoing surgery, said: “We were excited to come back home and as soon as the flights touch down here, it was a relief irrespective of the situation, the flood, the rain or whatever.”

A passenger of the Sydney flight, Amete Nasau, said she was glad to be home.

“I just can’t wait to get back home after spending six weeks in Australia.”

These returning Fijians are expected to self-isolation.
