The Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor confirmed yesterday that Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber’s contract ends in December.

Speaking to SUNports O’Connor said that Baber signed his contract after Fiji’s triumph at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Baber’s four-year term comes to an end this year and not after the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” O’Connor said.

“He had to fill a big shoe in 2016 after Ben Ryan left and since then he has been the face of the Fiji 7s team’s performance at the HSBC Sevens Series.”

O’Connor added the FRU board would follow the criteria in their contract policies.

“When the date comes the board will then decide on the contract terms,” he said.

“We will then review his performance before we can make any decisions whether to keep him or not.”

The past four years has been a learning curve for Baber, there were times wrong decisions being made but it was all part and parcel of the learning process.

Baber came in 2016 and was left to gather and scout for talents that can continue the legacy of the Fijian 7s team and to retain the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, Japan.

It was not an easy journey for the Welsh man who slowly started making his mark in the 2018/2019 HSBC World Sevens Series by guiding the team to win the series.

Since becoming the Fiji sevens team head coach, he has won eleven tournaments beating Ryan’s record of nine.
