COVID-19: Last Day For Travel Between The Islands

Today is the last day when people can travel in and out of Viti Levu and other islands as the Government has placed a restriction on the movement of people.

For many, this means a decision on where they would be spending the next few months. This was announced by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on March 25, 2020, as a measure to stop the spread of COVID-19 to outer islands.

“We’re seriously concerned about the virus ever reaching any of our outer island communities. From this Sunday, the 29th of March, all passenger travel to our outer islands will cease,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Shipping lines for freight will continue –– with increased bulk, but decreased frequency –– to ensure food and other essential goods are supplied across our islands.”

Of the COVID-19 five cases, four are related to the first case and within the confined area, only one case was in Suva and the patient had taken adequate care, he and his family members remain isolated in Navua.

Minister for Transport Jone Usamate clarified that the term outer islands refers to all and any travel from Viti Levu to any of the islands.

He said shipping companies had been informed. He said the Prime Minister would make an announcement this weekend, which would include information on what would happen to domestic flights. Airline companies Fiji Airways and Northern Air have said they would await Government instructions on the issue.

On Thursday, ship owners met with Mr Usamate discussing the viability of the decision.

Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said the Police would patrol the maritime zones to curb the illegal movement of people during this time.
