Olympics Postponement, A Blessing In Disguise: Baber
Fiji Airways Fiji sevens head coach Gareth Baber speaks to his players during their team training session at Albert Park in Suva on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

The postponement of the Olympic Games and Hong Kong 7s can be seen as a blessing in disguise for Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber.

This gives him more time to closely monitor and concentrate on preparation works ahead of the remaining HSBC Sevens Series.

“The task is that we really need to focus,” Gareth said.

“We essentially strengthened and developed some players that have come into the programme this season.

“This is to assist us steer our way through that season which is going to include 14 World Series tournaments plus the Olympics,” he said.

Baber adds that with the number of tournaments piling up in the series the team needs depth.

“We have generally the last few years generated this momentum, now we need to push on. The postponement has obviously given us the opportunity to get a couple of players back from injury,” he said.

“The more players we can get to know what we expect of them the better it is for us.

“This also gives everybody time to learn and master; every team member in the HSBC sevens tournament will be thinking the same thing.

“Hong Kong is now scheduled for October; our good record in Hong Kong needs to be maintained.

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team is going to play 14 tournaments before the next July Olympics in Japan.

There is four left for the 2019/2020 World Series.

“This final lap of the 2019/2020 series (four meets) and the new 2020/2021 series will make 10 tournaments and then the July Olympics will make it 15 tournaments altogether.

“No team has ever done that, we are working towards that now.”
