COVID-19: Council And Vendors Heed Social Distancing Rules

More than 200 farmers who come to sell their produce in Labasa have been decentralised into tents to maintain social distancing.

Market Master Alvin Chand said the council set up tents at the Carrier Stand to put their strategic plans into place.

“We have relocated the farmers shed to the carrier stand near Shop N Save supermarket, especially for Friday and Saturday when farmers flock the market,” Mr Chand said.

“Announcements have been made over the system to inform the customers as well and reminding vendors on the safety measures of washing their hands, wearing gloves and mask while serving the customers.”

More than 200 farmers arrived at the market on Friday and yesterday.

“Only one vendor is allowed per stall, to avoid overcrowding. All the vendors have been informed to keep their children at home for their own safety,” Mr Chand said.

“However, the table fees still applies even though some have raised their grievances in this regard. Most vendors are happy as the market is not closed and will remain open until we receive the directive from the Government.”

Labasa Farmers Association representative Sera Bogiliwa said they have to accept the precautionary measures initiated by the council.

She hopes customers will also come to their new location.

Vendor Risha Deo from Waidamudamu said the temporary location had ample distance among the vendors and the decision will benefit the safety of their health against the deadly coronavirus.
