20 Year Old Student Convicted And Fined

A 20-year-old University of Fiji student who crossed the Lautoka Confined Area was convicted by the Sigatoka Magistrate court.

The accused Josua Bolawaqatabu of Sigatoka appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.

He was charged with one count of disobedience of lawful order.

Bolawaqatabu was represented by Siteri Radrole of Legal Aid. Police prosecutor Inspector Mohammed Shameem represented the state.

The court heard that the accused was renting in the Lautoka confined area close to the Lautoka border. On March 21 the accused crossed the border through the sugar cane field. Bolawaqatabu told the Court as he had run out of money and food.

In her bail application, Ms Radrole told the court that her client was a first offender and to consider the financial difficulties he encountered with the sole intent to cross the border and reach to his parents.

Ms Radrole said her client was remorseful for his action and had cooperated with the Police when he was arrested.

Magistrate Savou sentenced the accused with a fine of $500 to pay in 28 days.

The court will review the payment of the fine on May 4.
