After being stuck in the Lautoka confined area for 19 days, a Fijian couple thanked Fiji Airways for enabling their safe return to the United States.

Following the lifting of the restriction yesterday, Jay Narayan and his wife, Rohini, left on the special Fiji Airways flight to Los Angeles last night.

“I am thankful to the Fiji Airways flight that is provided to take us home today,” Mr Narayan.

The 65-year-old said while he felt a sense of relief to finally go home, he was sad not to have been able to visit his family in different parts of the country.

“We used to enjoy our every visit here in Fiji. We used to visit our family members around the country,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that we would be on a lockdown at Lautoka and I got mad at my wife because they had insisted with my daughter for us to come to Fiji.

“We have only one son at home with us. When he heard of what had happened to us he cried and kept on calling us every day.

“I was worried about him every day and I couldn’t sleep well in Lautoka.”

The couple arrived on March 18 and were due to leave on March 28.

He said they tried hard to make arrangements with the authorities but were not allowed to cross the border.

“After the restriction opened this morning, I told my wife that we need to come early to the airport even though the flight departs at 6pm.”
