Violators Of COVID-19 Rules Have Earned A New Name – COV-IDIOTS

It was revealed yesterday that COVID-19 Patient 9’s act of irresponsibility showed that 830 people, may have come in contact directly or indirectly with him.

Of this, five tested positive and they were close relatives of Patient 9.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said the patient, who returned from India via Singapore failed to self-isolate.

People who do not adhere to these directives are simply COV-IDIOTS, who Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says are guilty of irresponsible behaviour.
Patient 9 infected five of his family members:

  • Son – Patient 7 (barber)
  • Daughters-in-law – Patients 7 and 12, (in Suva and Labasa)
  • Granddaughter- Patient 11 and,
  • Wife – Patient 15

His son and daughter-in-law in Suva were known to have continued to work for at least another week before they started to show symptoms.

Dr Waqainabete said the ministry had traced some customers of Jade Hair Salon and Supercuts but wanted people to come up and call the ministry if they felt they had been in contact with the two.

He said they are now in close contact with the remaining 830 people and should they develop symptoms of COVID-19 then they will begin with testing them to confirm.

One test costs the Ministry of Health and Medical Services close to $2000.

Patient 15

Overall, the ministry has so far tested 536 people, and Fiji recorded its 15th COVID-19 patient.

At the televised press conference yesterday Mr Bainimarama said: “Our newly-confirmed case of coronavirus is the husband of an existing patient from Lautoka –– the Zumba classmate of patient number one.

“This was a case we have expected for some time and, thankfully, this 33-year-old gentleman did not develop any symptoms until after he was safely in isolation and posed no risk to the public.

“This is the sixth confirmed transmission that can be traced back to our first case.”

Since the announcement of Fiji’s first case of COVID-19 on March 19, the following have been made:

  • 1400 Fijians have been through the self-quarantine process after returning from overseas
  • 589 are still being monitored by authorities
  • 150 are in Government designated isolation facilities

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho said all those breaching directives would be made to answer, even those in isolation, once their quarantine period was over.
