The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has used about $10 million so far in combating the COVID-19 pandemic confirmed its minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He said operations by the ministry included contact tracing. He said 834 people had to be contact traced as a result of one patient.

He said this number could increase.

“So far, we have used about $10m, some of this money had been given by the government even before the mini-budget. We are looking at $3m from here,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“Above all, we have to remember that we are working with other ministries and those ministries are supporting us as well.”

Dr Waqainabete said people have to realise that COVID-19 was a very different virus and acted differently from anything they had encountered.

Government is also keeping people at facilities funded by them.

“So far, those who are in the Government maintained facilities are doing well. We have the support of the disciplined forces,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“We are making sure they are comfortable, the rooms are nice and clean, and we ensure that they have access to health officials.”

Money has also been spent on getting thermal scanners which are placed at the Nadi International Airport and additional ventilators.

TC Harold preparedness

Fever clinics which fall into the path of severe Tropical Cyclone Harold have been moved. Some to newer venues and some within health centres.

Dr Waqainabete said this was done to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

He said the fever clinics would be isolated from all other clinical functions.
