The Minister for Defence, National Security and Foreign Affairs, Inia Seruiratu, officiated the handing over ceremony of 47 vehicles from the Chinese Government at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks Nabuni Camp on Tuesday.

Mr Seruiratu in his speech acknowledged the longstanding diplomatic relationship with China since 1975 which has benefitted immensely from the partnership despite various challenges Fiji had gone through over the years.

“In times of need, you are a true friend. This diplomatic friendship was founded under the principles of mutual trust, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared interests and mutual benefits,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“I am indeed honoured to host the handing over of the Military vehicles and equipment donated by the People’s Republic of China under the existing Defence cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Fiji and the Ministry of Defence of the People’s Republic of China.”

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Qian Bo said that the co-operation between the two nations contributed to the capacity building of the RFMF.

He said it was critical for natural disaster relief and humanitarian aid in the country which will be a role model for developing nations in the region.

Also present during the auspicious event was the Permanent Secretary Defence and National Security Mr Manasa Lesuma and the Deputy Commander RFMF Brigadier-General Mohammed Aziz.

The vehicles included three off-road ambulances and an off-road water tanker which will assist the RFMF during deployment.
