It was a frightful experience for Henry Pickering as he was getting ready to leave for work early yesterday morning.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation employee said Tropical Cyclone Harold could not be compared to Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston which devastated Fiji in 2016.

Mr Pickering, 49, said he has never seen anything like TC Harold.

“I was up by 5 am to get ready for work, the waves were something else. I’ve never seen the waves like that before,” he said.

The Pickering family have lived near Navutu beach in Lautoka for close to 50 years.

“Ever since I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen anything like this compared to TC Winston.”

He said the floodwaters reached their back doorstep and it brought in a lot of rubbish from the sea.

Yesterday, their compound was covered with all kinds of rubbish.

Some Lautoka residents made use of the ambarella or wi that were scattered around the compound.

“The water was six feet high and I hope it dies down soon,” he added.
