Vodafone Fiji has put on hold their sponsorship to the Fiji Football Association until December, says a senior official. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said this was understandable due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our economy.

“This is not only us but other sports Vodafone is sponsoring,” Yusuf said.

“In December we will sit with Vodafone again to discuss and endorse our way forward.”

Last week, SUNsports had approached Vodafone on whether they’ll maintain or cut down their sponsorship to football, rugby and rugby league in the country.

However, Vodafone indicated that they were going to reply but did not when this edition went to press. In January 6, 2019 Vodafone sealed a $5.5 million sponsorship for the next 5 years with Fiji FA. The sponsorship covered all level of football from schools, youth, women, districts and national teams.

Yusuf confirmed that the Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament and the Fiji FA Congress set for May 1 are now cancelled.

He said at the moment they are working from home and will make a decision once Government has given their directive.

“If we are starting then we will have put up a tentative calendar and make readjustments.”

Yusuf pointed out that they are making a daily update on how districts and players have been affected during the lockdown period caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“This will come in handy as we will have a fair idea of how players and districts have suffered,” he added.
