Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes, has commended the work of the Fijian Government, especially Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services, in their COVID-19 response.

“I’ve been deeply impressed with the efforts made by the Fijian Government to reduce the spread of the virus in Fiji,” said Mr Feakes.

“Australia continues to work closely with the Fijian Government to support their efforts to respond to the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Australian Government has committed $F15.4 million ($AUD10.5 million) in budget support to the Fijian Government to boost its COVID-19 response efforts.

This is in addition to an initial $F1.5 million ($AUD1.06 million) provided to Fiji’s Health Ministry and $F299,000 ($AUD 204,000) to the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces to assist in their covid-19 response.

Assistance also includes provisions of personal protection equipment such as gowns, surgical masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and other medical supplies to assist local health workers who are on the frontlines of COVID-19.

We recognise Australia remains a transit hub for Fiji to the world, and we will continue to facilitate the transfer of essential goods and services, including medical supplies and equipment.

Australia is also committed to making sure Fijians and other Pacific Islanders can get home, including transiting through Australia if needed.

Under new visa measures announced by the Australian Government, Pacific workers, who are in Australia under the Pacific Labour Scheme  and Seasonal Worker Programme whose visas are due to expire, will be able to remain in Australia for up to 12 months.

We are working with employers to ensure that they are supported through this crisis, particularly those who are currently unable to return home.

Australian aid programme to the Pacific is also being adapted to help manage the broader health, economic and social impacts of the pandemic.

“Australia and Fiji share a long history of co-operation and support in times of disasters. We are here for Fiji during this difficult time and we will get through this together, “said Mr Feakes.

The significant co-operation between our two countries in response to this pandemic goes to the heart of the Vuvale-Partnership. Australia remains committed to standing with our Fijian family during this crisis.
