Youth Sentenced To 30 Hours Community Work

Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili yesterday sentenced a 24-year-old youth to complete 30 hours of community work.

The accused Shahin Ali was charged with violating curfew orders when he was found at 9:20pm along Nairai Road in Raiwaqa on Tuesday night.

He was returning from buying suki (tobacco) with two juveniles when they were arrested.

The court heard that they were aware of the curfew but did not think they would be caught by the Police because the shop was close to their house.

Ali pleaded guilty to the offence and informed Chief Magistrate Ratuvili that he could not pay a fine.

He said he was unemployed and was unable to find employment because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He also pleaded with the court to give him another chance at rehabilitation.

With the accused’s consent, Chief Magistrate Ratuvili sentenced him to complete 30 hours of community work under the supervision of the Police prosecution in Suva.
