Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar visited three schools in Tailevu yesterday to survey the damages caused during Tropical Cyclone Harold.

She visited Tailevu North College, Namalata District School and Queen Victoria School.

Ms Akbar said classrooms and labs in Tailevu North College were badly damaged.

“Ministry of Education (MOE) will speak to relevant authorities for a thorough damage assessment,” she said.

The Ministry will arrange for library books to be distributed to households to ensure continued learning.

Assistant Principal Waisiki Koroivulavou said he was happy to see that MOE was helping the students academically and assessing the damaged school buildings.

Ms Akbar urged that Walesi is set up in communities and villages.

“We want students to be occupied in any educational learning material or watch educational channels on TV, we want to divert them from external examination fears,” she said.

Meanwhile, Namalata District School was not as badly damaged as Tailevu North College.

But the Minister discussed the distribution of teaching materials with the school heads, and urged teachers to work from home.

“We do not know when everything will be normal but we need to ensure that students have something to do at home,” Ms Akbar said.

She said she was impressed to see workers were cleaning up the Queen Victoria School compound after the mess left behind by the cyclone.

School Principal Sakiusa Taginasedrau said the cost of damage stood around $30,000.

They aim to distribute learning materials to the parents by next week.
