Fiji Swimming to use grants on selected swimmers.

Speaking to Sun sports President Ben Rova confirmed that all funds will be used of those swimmers who have been selected to participate at certain competition.

“As for the deferred Tokyo Olympics, our swimmers vying for selection are on current scholarship grants that should be assisting them in their preparation,” he said.

“Some have already been utilising their scholarship funds before the clamp down came into full effect.

“We have a grant that we are still to fully utilise but that is being kept until our team has been selected.”

Rova added that his team hopes to meet once the virus has gone away.

“Once we get back to some normalcy, we will be meeting as an Executive team to assess our situation and put in place our plans and “where to from here” strategies, including our reminder of Calendar of Events for 2020 and the postponed Oceania Swimming Championships (which is an Olympic qualifying event),”he said.

“Right now Fiji Swimming Exec utives have not met with Fiji National Sports Council & FASANOC due to social distancing and, restrictions on movements to discuss our preparation plans for the swimmers and their coaches preparing for Olympic qualifications.”

“We are also going to seek funding assistance from our International Federation FINA repreparations grants towards our swimmers and officials and also, we have some planned activities locally to raise funds but, this is all dependent on the lifting of current corvid-19 pandemic virus.

Sponsors

With no sponsorship on board Fiji Swimming continues to approach companies that are interested in assisting the sport.

“Fiji Swimming unfortunately does not have any major sponsors aside from partnerships during events such as National Championships, etc,” said Rova.

“ We continue to approach companies who are willing to give us an opportunity to be our major sponsor buddies but, we are a sport that is not considered in the A list of sporting Federations for local companies to spend sponsorship thousands on. “

Rova added that some companies supported the sport in kind.

“We have companies who have generously supported us in kind and we continue to work with these companies,” he said.

Rova said that the sport was blessed to have grant bodies who help Fiji swimming through funds and scholarships for swimmers to compete locally and overseas.

“Fiji Swimming is fortunate to be able to access funding through various grant bodies like the Fiji Nationals Sports Commission, FASANOC, IOC, FINA and DFAT through projects like the Pacific Sports Partnership program (PSP),” he said.

“These institution provide scholarship grants for our Elite swimmers and also, funding for our development programs.”
