A little girl’s messages to her father, who is a nurse on the frontline looking after COVID-19 patients at the Labasa Hospital, may just break your heart.

Every day since April 16, seven-year-old Michelle Kumar has been writing letters to her father, Sanjay Kumar, anticipating his return and telling him how much she misses him.

When Fiji Sun visited her home at Vunika, Labasa, she was found marking dates on the calendar since she last saw him.

She was also writing her latest letter to her father which read:

Dear Papa

I miss you a lot.

Please come home fast.

I miss the time we spend together.

I know you are taking are of sick people.

May God bless you

Even thou you are far from me you are close to my heart.

Love you, Michelle.

Her mother, Esther Leilani, is also a nurse, working at the Men’s Medical Ward, Labasa Hospital.

Even though they often have video calls, her daughter came up with the idea to write letters to her father.

Michelle said: “Papa didn’t say bye to me when he left last Thursday because he knew I won’t let him leave.

“I miss him so much because he used to play with me, make food for me, made sure I had shower and dressed well.

However, Michelle’s father would need to be quarantined for another 14 days when he is cleared next month.

“Mummy said papa would be home after two months.

“I told mummy I will wait for papa and celebrate birthday together when he comes home.”

From Monday to Friday, Michelle’s mother drops her off at her uncle’s place.

“I spend the whole day there since my grandparents are busy in their farm.

“I feel sorry for mummy because she hasn’t seen papa also.

“She told me the struggles she faces to get my letter delivered to papa.

“She is trying very hard to make sure I am safe.

“Whenever we have viber call I find him looking like an astronaut.

“I asked him to explain why he looked different,” the Year Three student of Bethel Primary School said.

“He said he was trying to help the sick people get better so that he can come home early.

“I am proud of my father. I write letters to him to tell him that I love him and will wait for him.”

Michelle is yet to understand the reason why her father has to be away from her. She doesn’t fully understand the details of the pandemic.

Mr Kumar of Seaqaqa in Macuata Province has been in the nursing career for 13 years.

He is among other nurses looking after five COVID-19 patients in isolation.
