Analysis:

Lovers on a date could now be in trouble following the arrest and conviction of a couple involved in public display of affection at the Suva foreshore earlier this week.

It will not affect couples living together in the same home, married or otherwise.

And it is not only ringing true for public places, but for hotels and motels, which have been known to accommodate endeavours of the romantic kind.

Hotels in Suva said they had stopped what they refer to as the ‘short-time’ rates, booking in mostly individuals and confirmed couples for longer durations.

As the World Health Organisation highlighted, there is a new normal now and people will have to adapt to it.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said police officers had been directed by the Government on social gathering which states any assembly of individuals.

The Government has made it known what is expected. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete have also shed light on the dos and don’ts during COVID-19.

Police have been clearing people gathered next to the seashore.

If people are not walking, running or exercising all other activities are being considered social gatherings. This also means that people cannot visit relatives.

There is also a tendency to forget it is not only social gathering that is being discouraged. People have been told to stay at home and if there is no reason to leave, then don’t.

There is a restriction on gyms, nightclubs, swimming pools, contact sports involving large gatherings, kava consumption in large gatherings with the exception that only members of the same home are involved.
