Scenes of celebration by the Ministry of Health staff, families and friends of the first of the recovered COVID-19 patients were recorded on camera outside Lautoka Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Eight of the 18 patients are said to have recovered, however, they have to complete 14-days of isolation since the declaration of recovery.

This means self-isolation at home and a chance to move out of the isolation units at the hospital.

Permanent secretary for Health Bernadette Welch said the footage depicted a large gathering in which the very physical distancing principles advocated by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services were not observed.

“To say that the Minister (Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete) and I were disappointed to see this is an understatement,” she said.

“I have also instructed the Head of Human Resources to convene an investigation panel with a majority of external members to conduct a disciplinary investigation that reports directly to me, consistent with the Public Service Commission Disciplinary Guidelines.”
