A man full of love and compassion, he prioritised his family over everything else.

This is how the late Ratu Alifereti Ulukalala Baleisasa Finau Mara’s daughter, Adi Lawedua Mara, described and honoured him.

It was during his resurrection mass yesterday where a closed church service, allowing only close family members, friends and the diplomatic corps gathered at Stella Maris Convent Chapel in Nasese.

Ratu Finau was the son of the late Turaga na Tui Nayau and Former Prime Minister,  Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and Burebasaga Confederacy paramount chief, Ro Lady Lala Mara.

The traditional procession saw women from the chiefly Vuanirewa clan sitting on the roadside leading up to the chapel. These women sat with clasped hands, sitting on their side with their heads bowed as a mark of respect to the dead member of a chiefly household.

Adi Lawedua said: “When I was little my brother and I used to go up to his house to spend the night, he would want us all to sleep together in the same bed and he would always hug us very tight.

“He was always protective, up until I was older he would still choose to hug me and kiss me on the cheek because it was his nature, very loving.

“His eyes would always light up when I take my children up to him, he loved his grandchildren so much.”

Later, the Vuanirewa clan handed over Ratu Finau’s body to the Valelevu clan of Lomanikoro, Rewa.

His body was laid to rest there yesterday, at the chiefly burial ground beside his mother, Na Marama Bale Na Roko Tui Dreketi.

Ratu Finau Mara is survived by his long time partner Vitinia Buadromo and two children Adi Lawedua Mara and Ratu Salesi Kinikinilau Mara.
