A 20-year-old man charged with aggravated burglary told Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili yesterday that he was assaulted by a Police officer in the court cell block.

Emosi Tabuasei appeared with co-accused Aluvio Kalokalodromu, 19, and were represented by the Legal Aid Commission.

Their lawyer, Joeli Nasa said he was informed that Tabuasei was assaulted at the Raiwaqa Police Station and also at the court cell block yesterday morning while waiting for his case to be called.

Tabuasei was asked whether he knew the name of the Police officer who assaulted him, to which he said it was a Sergeant Pau.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Dickson asked if both accused men could be remanded because there were pending investigations against them for similar offences from two separate Police stations.

Kalokalodromu’s request for bail was denied.

Chief Magistrate Ratuvili ordered for Tabuasei to be medically examined and his report to be submitted to the court.

Both men have been further remanded at the Raiwaqa Police Station and will re-appear in court on April 17.
