PSV Drivers Urged To Provide Sanitisers To Passengers

Public service vehicles (PSV) drivers are urged to provide hand sanitisers to passengers before they board.

At a press conference last Friday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama stated passengers were also encouraged to wear face masks while travelling.

However, the Fiji Bus Operators Association president Nasir Ali Shah said passengers should carry their own santisers for their own safety.

“It all depends on the bus operators if they want to carry hand sanitisers, but everyone needs to ensure that they look after themselves rather than us looking after them,” he said.

Goundar Shipping Services Limited managing director, George Goundar, said the shipping industry would try its best to purchase hand sanitisers, if the stock was available.

“We have soap and water on board, which is the most effective way to clean your hands, but if we find sanitisers, we will definitely get it,” he said.

Mr Goundar said passengers safety was paramount, but at the same time they must be responsible and be cautious by carrying their own sanitisers.

“The Government has done their part, rather than being dependent on the transportation services, passengers should be prepared.”

Fiji Taxi Association general secretary, Ashwin Lal, said some drivers were already practising this.

“It is difficult to get hand santisers but in order to protect the public and the nation from COVID-19, we have encouraged our drivers to provide passengers with santisers whenever possible,” he said.
