A man and his mother are in the middle of a controversy for allegedly obstructing the authorities from doing their job.

Sheik Shiraz of Field 40, Lautoka is claiming Police assault when they were served with a bench warrant for his father.

Mr Shiraz claimed that initially they co-operated with Police but they allegedly became aggressive when advised to remove their shoes.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the report was received after 1 pm on the same day. However, when officers reached out to Mr Shiraz, they were informed that he wished to speak with the media first, and not with the Police.

“We received information that the bench warrantee (Mr Shiraz’s father) for a case of assault was sighted at their house and officers acted on this information,” she said.

“We have the authority to enter any premises suspected of harbouring a bench warrantee.

“The person has already committed the crime but evading the authorities and that is what the officers from Lautoka were doing.

“We will investigate his claims of assault but also look into the issue if obstruction as they did not allow Police officers to conduct their work.”

Mr Shiraz said: “We said we just wanted to know where he did the accident and who did he assault but they said they were not allowed to explain so I asked: ‘Why not? We are his family?’ When we told them to take off their shoes then they started pushing us.”
