A retired nurse and midwife said nurses were often taken for granted but regardless, they did their work diligently without expecting praise.

Those were the sentiments of Emma Bouoro, the Commissioner St John’s Ambulance Fiji while celebrating World International Nurses Day yesterday in Suva.

Elsewhere across the country health workers and nurses came together to observe the day and acknowledge their work.

“At the end of the day we go home satisfied of the work that we are passionately called to do,” he said.

“We see the beginning of life at birth and the end of one which is always an emotional one at times.

“Nurses are trained not to show their emotions. Every year on this day we celebrate our profession which carries us through,” she added.

Ms Bouoro said the organisation only complemented the work that health professionals do.

Around the country, the medical and health fraternity celebrated International Nurses Day.

This is the time when the entire world is focussed on all nurses as they contribute in their own unique way as front liners towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fiji Nursing Association in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health continue to work hand in hand to deliver quality services to all Fijians around the country.
