While a Stop Order has been issued for the WG Friendship Plaza, some leeway has been provided to do some work that would ensure safety.

The notice of the Stop Order was given by the Suva City Council.

It comes after concerns were raised when people witnessed workers on the WG Friendship Plaza. There were welding works being done.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar said the work being done was necessary as it was for safety reasons.

“WG has been carrying out works only to strengthen support to railings on roadsides to avoid it falling,” she said.

“No other work is taking place and Suva City Council is monitoring daily. The support work will finish on Thursday.”

The WG Friendship Plaza, Yue Laii Hotel and a building project in Rodwell Road by Graceful Investments were issued with the notices by the Suva City Council more than a week ago.

According to the council, the engineers for the company have to provide them with certification of the fire standards to see if they complied with the National Building Code.

For the WG Friendship Plaza and the Yue Lai Hotel, Engineered Designs are the project managers.

According to them, for the Yue Lai Hotel Project, a Fire Report from a specialist Fire Engineer was currently being arranged.

For WG Friendship Plaza, the owners were stuck in China as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
