Fourth Cane Payment Out

A sugarcane farmer in Lautoka says the fourth cane payment received from Government has come just in time to cater for his family’s needs.

Long time sugarcane farmer, Imtiaz Ali Sahib said he received his cane payment last Friday and he was grateful to Government for continuing to support the many sugarcane farmers who were suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Sahib who resides in Drasa, Lautoka said the cane payment was also given well before time.

He harvested 377 tonnes of sugarcane from his seven-and-a half acres of land.

“I think it has been timely because it is two weeks ahead of the schedule date so it will help the sugarcane farmers and enable them in terms of whatever needs they have, they can utilise the money for that especially in this trying time,” he said.

“Other businesses are down, for one’s sustenance you can either do your vegetable gardening, backyard farming or depend on your sugarcane payment that is only two things that we have.”

Mr Sahib who also runs his plumbing business said it was tough experiencing the effects of the pandemic.

“I had so many things, even my capital projects to be done here like the maintenance of the house.

“I can’t afford it,” he added.

“The Government is still trying to sustain us by topping up our payment.”
