Damodaran Mudaliar was among the 4000 sugarcane farmers in the Northern Division who received their fourth cane payment yesterday.

Mr Mudaliar has been a sugarcane farmer for the past 45 years. He produced 500 tonnes of cane for last year’s cane crushing season.

The 61-year-old from Tuatua, Labasa said he previously had two farms where he used to produce nearly 1000 tonnes of cane.

He has six labourers and said he produces cane manually.

“I don’t feel like using a mechanical harvester on my farm because it damages the sugarcane farm and we have to replant it again,” Mr Mudaliar said.

He said each labourer charged $20 a tonne for 80 tonnes.

“The labourers are working hard so that the field is cleared for new plantations.”

Mr Mudaliar said for the 2020 cane cutting season, he estimates to produce 700 tonnes of cane.

“Basically I belong to a farming background as my parents were also farming.”

He said if the farmers would follow proper time management, they wouldn’t face any difficulties. He compared farming to daily exercise, saying that a farmer should work hard so he can supply good products and get rewarded.

“I used to be in my farm at six in the morning and return home at 6pm,” he said.
