Fiji Volleyball Federation president Liga Gukisuva has welcomed the decision to allow volleyball as a recreational sport. And awaits word when proper competitions can be organised.

Government announced that non-contact sports such as volleyball and tennis can now be played. However, participants should be less than 20 and organised tournaments are still restricted at this stage.

“Wonderful news, I’m glad volleyball has been given the green light,” he said.

“At the same time, I would like to ask all associations and teams to adhere to the instructions and safety measures outlined by our health ministry.

“Once we have total lifting of restrictions then we can implement tournaments based on our annual plan.

“Play safe, keep well and let’s look after each other.”

He said teams could now prepare and be ready when the season starts,

Brigadier-General Qiliho stated that all contact sports were prohibited.

“However, members of the public are advised that non-contact sports such as golf, tennis and volleyball are now permitted,” he said.

“Please be advised however that golf and tennis clubs bars are to remain closed until further notice.

“However those intending to get together for a friendly volleyball match whether it be in your neighbourhood or with friends are advised to limit the numbers to those playing and those watching to less than 20. Any number above 20 will be considered a breach,” he said.

“As the relaxation of the restrictions on a limited number of non-contact sports is lifted, other contact sports such as touch rugby, football, basketball and others remain prohibited.”
