Jasa Veremalua on attack for San Diego Legions in Major League Rugby in USA

Former 7s and Olympian Jasa Veremalua says it is time to give others a chance to play at the Tokyo Olympics next year.

He said he would’ve made himself available if the Olympics was held this year.

The Korotogo, Nadroga native now plays for the San Diego Legion in Major League Rugby (MLR) in the United States.

He said that the termination of the MLR has been a hard pill to swallow.

“This COVID19 crisis has caused everything to come to a standstill, other sports have been affected as well,” he said.

Olympic Games

He said the postponement of the Olympic Games was a great time for those who were in the squad or even upcoming players.

“The postponement has given them another chance to prepare well and defend the title.

“I thought if it was held this year then I would have taken time to talk with the coaching staff. It is time to give others the chance, count me out. There are a lot of boys in the squad and others who play in local tournaments.

“We know that Coach Gareth Baber and the selectors are aware of the numbers of players who want to make the team.

“My message to the boys is give their time and mind to training well.

“How we spend the time and even the food we eat. We succeeded under Coach Ben Ryan as anything is possible.”

The 31-year- old has played five times for the SD Legion this season before it was terminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Rugby in MLR is growing. There are a lot of Fijian boys playing in the competition. In four to five years time, this tournament is expected to gain more momentum with a lot from signings from all over the globe,” he said.

Also playing in the competition are former Hurricanes and Flying Fijians lock Api Naikatini, Naulia Dawai, Veremalua Vugakoto and Vatemo Ravouvou.

Veremalua made his debut for Fiji at the 2013 Wellington Sevens.
