Over 33,000 households have received seed packaging from the Ministry of Agriculture under its Home Gardening Initiatives, says line minister Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy said this was a success for the ministry.

“This initiative has greatly enhanced food security by giving our people direct access to a diversity of nutritionally rich foods, increased purchasing power from savings on savings on food provision due to the decrease in production and trade caused by TC Harold and COVID-19 and the continuity and the sustaining food supply through home gardening now and into the future,” he said.

The ministry will cease the distribution of seedlings under the home gardening packages initiative from this Friday until September.

“We want to concentrate on distributing seeds to farmers wanting to plant for commercial purposes, where we will supply dalo tops, cassava tops and seeds that would plant acres of root crops.

“We want to promote these resources for medium to large commercial agriculture,” he added.

The Ministry will continue to enhance its programme for farmers who want to take their level of outputs to the next level by providing them with technical assistance, resources, seedlings and expertise to interested farmers.
