Raman Pratap Singh A Champion Of Democracy: NFP

Mr Singh was an NFP Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1999 who served under the leadership of party and Opposition leader Justice Jai Ram Reddy. He was also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee that formulated the 1997 Constitution out of the Report of the Reeves Commission.

Raman Pratap Singh, the former president for the National Federation Party for about nine years was remembered as a pillar of strength, champion of democracy, good governance and transparency.

The seasoned politician passed away on Monday at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after a short illness. In a statement, the NFP says the late Mr Singh will be missed dearly.

Mr Singh was an NFP Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1999 who served under the leadership of party and Opposition leader Justice Jai Ram Reddy. He was also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee that formulated the 1997 Constitution out of the Report of the Reeves Commission.

Politician, Jagannath Sami, says the death of his friend the late Mr Singh is a great loss to Fiji.

“Raman was a simple, ordinary, humble and approachable man. One would hardly mistake him as a lawyer, given his simplicity, always helpful, a great company and a person who got along with people of all ages,” Mr Sami said.

Background

He was a lawyer by profession, Vice- Chairman of the Sugar Cane Growers Council from (1985 -1992), Member of Parliament (1992-1999) and party president from 2005-2014. He was the son of NFP Stalwart Ram Jati Singh.

Funeral announcements have yet to be announced.
