Nakelo Treasure Island Resort and Spa will be ready to welcome locals to the island from June 1.

And, in what will be a first for the resort, it will introduce local rates, said resort general manager Jim Saukuru.

In the meantime, repair works are in progress to address the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold to the four-star resort in the Mamanuca Islands.

TC Harold renovations

Mr Saukuru said the cost of damage caused by TC Harold on the property was $1.8 million.

“With no guests on the 78 – bure resort, work was able to move quickly to get things back into shape.

“Prior to TC Harold, $1.585 million in damage was caused by TC Sarai in December last year.”

“They would have to pay for their own meals and drinks here,” Mr Saukuru said.

“We had 147 staff working prior to the coronavirus pandemic, and had to reduce this number to 20 employees, 17 of whom are based on the island and three at the head office in Lautoka.

“What the company wants is for all staff to return and share the work on reduced hours, as this will give everyone something to take home in their pay packet.

“They have families who rely on their employment, so the quicker we get locals staying with us the better for these employees.”

The resort is owned by landowners, tokatoka Nakelo from Viseisei Village in Vuda, and is the first “four-star resort” in Fiji to be owned by an indigenous clan.
