Nasinu Residents Responsible For Mounting Rubbish

Nasinu residents have only themselves to blame as rubbish keeps mounting in some areas.

Nasinu and Nausori special administrator chair Elizabeth Algar said the residents have mixed up the waste and not placed them according to the different waste categories.

She said the amount of rubbish is increasing day by day which is also causing a delay in collection due to the large piles and more so the weight of the rubbish.

The Commissioner Central’s office has come to the aid of Nasinu Town Council by providing three trucks and 35 personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

Ms Algar said they have had no option but to issue fines to people who even after collection have been piling rubbish.

She said Nepani was one area where residents have been fined.

Ms Algar said keeping Nasinu to the Nausori corridor required a change in human behaviour and taking ownership of waste management requirements.

“We highly encourage composting to lessen the loads to the Naboro landfill. Most of the waste collected had turned to manure that is rich soil for home gardening,” she said.

“Each resident needs to lead the way in keeping Nasinu and Nausori corridor clean. We need to take pride in our cities. Most villages around the country are much cleaner compared to our town areas.

“Take ownership in your community as we are wasting too much resources in carting waste to Naboro. We can better use these resources and funds to beautify our towns that create a safe space for people to flourish.”
