Australian boxing is in mourning after the passing of the legendary Hector Thompson in Brisbane last Wednesday, he was 70 years old.

A former Australian and Commonwealth light-welterweight champion, Thompson fought 87 times in a 10-year professional career.

Fijian fans remember Thompson after he fought Fiji’s Golden Boy Sakaraia Ve twice in 1979.

Ve’s manager/trainer John Ramos rated Thompson.

“I have got sad news from my daughter in Australia that boxer Hector Thompson passed.

“Knowing him as a boxer and a great person, a great boxing champion meeting Thompson twice in Fiji in 1979 when I got him to fight Sakaraia Ve for the South Pacific welterweight title was a honour. He was a former Australian and Commonwealth junior welterweight boxing champion and world ranked fighter who fought Roberto Duran for world title.

“Great loss true sons of Australia. RIP CHAMP.”

Ramos earlier recalled how they managed to get Thompson to fight Ve for the second time in Ba.

Ve had just lost twice to Canadian Clyde Gray for the Commonwealth welterweight title. Many boxing pundits have written Ve, off but not John Ramos.

Ramos recalled: “Ve then one day requested me; ‘Tamana can you get Hector Thompson for a return fight.’ I told him that I can and I did.

“Thompson agreed to defend his South Pacific welterweight title for $5000 with three airline return tickets. Ba promoter Dr Raj Bali agreed and the fight took place in Ba’s Govind Park. There was a big crowd of 8000 people that watched the fight.

“Ve and I planned the fight on how to counter Thompson from the first round. Ve followed the plan and stopped Thomson in the 11th round. When ring announcer Gary A’Costa announced that Ve was the new South Pacific welterweight champion, it was emotional moment for us as we were in tears.”
