Quick response by firefighters in Rakiraki and Tavua helped contain a fire from spreading to adjacent buildings in Rakiraki Town yesterday morning.

Eye witness, Ilaisa Vakaloloma, the Works Manager for the Rakiraki Town Council, says it is believed that the fire broke out from a restaurant.

Mr Vakaloloma said he was on his way to the same shop when he saw smoke coming out of the building and the staff stood outside watching in despair as the flames continued to cover the building.

“I left the office around 9am to meet the shop owner who had planned to give me some semiya after their Eid celebrations,” he said.

“When I reached, I saw the staff standing outside the building and according to the staff the fire had started from the kitchen.”
