The Ministry of Agriculture is determined to help boost its agribusiness potential to actively promote agri-led economic growth in Fiji.

In Parliament yesterday, line Minister Mahendra Reddy said the goal could be achieved through the establishment of large commercial ventures.

This means, he said, the provision of land to investors who were willing to develop commercial ventures in Fiji.

“We have had several interests and are actively working with medium and large scale operators to secure land and the required input to take this sector to a whole new level,” Mr Reddy said.

The ministry, he added, was working closely with the ITaukei Land Trust Board regarding this initiative.

Meanwhile, Mr Reddy said his ministry had been successful in its COVID-19 response initiatives, especially the home gardening seed packages.

So far:

  • 36,495 seed packages have been distributed across the four divisions Fiji; and
  • 108,370 planting materials and seeds distributed to farmers in the four divisions.
