8 Children Under Five, Victims Of Alleged Rape: Police

Eight children under the age of five are victims of alleged rape cases, Police statistics for the first quarter of this year indicated.

This is compared to four cases for the same period last year.

Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said the majority of the perpetrators were related to the victims.

Of the eight cases, two were allegedly victimised by their father and grandfather, while the remaining six were allegedly committed by relatives.

“The youngest victim is a two-year-old girl from Rakiraki whereby the offender is her 28-year-old cousin,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

“In 2019, a three-year-old child was the youngest rape victim recorded in the first quarter of 2019 whereby the perpetrator was a 14-year-old student.”

Despite these disturbing figures, the overall crime rate against children on rape, sexual assault and attempted rape decreased by 35 per cent in the first four months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

Even though there is a decrease, cases, where young children are falling victims to sexual offences, is a major concern.

In comparison to the first quarter of 2019 – seven cases were recorded in the West, five in the East, three in the Southern Division and one in the North

So far, none of the divisions recorded alleged rape cases for 2020.

However for the same period last year, three cases were compiled in the Southern Division, and one in the Western Division.
