In joining this year’s World Environment Day celebration, members from Soroptimist International pledged to plant 500 trees in the different schools around the Lautoka area.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the members had postponed the tree planting project.

Organisation president, Zareena Bi, said 100 trees were first planted at the Lautoka’s Botanical Garden in March.

“We had pledged to plant 500 trees at the beginning of the year which was on the first week of March during our ‘Saturday of Service’ where we planted 100 trees at the Botanical Garden and the plan was to continue after every month to plant once a month, but we had to take a break because of COVID-19,” said Ms Bi.

“Planting of these trees for our future generation is important and when we come out of COVID-19 we want to come out to a better world and the environment is something on the list.”

Yesterday, the members continued with their project and planted 50 trees at the Sunshine Special School.

She added the team also planned to visit schools in the rural areas.
