Assistance from Fijians to those who have lost their jobs in the tourism sector continues to grow.

The Rotary Club in Lautoka (District 9920) has so far donated more than 100 food hampers to a number of families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the tourism sector.

The club’s youth ambassador and projects, Melissa Natawake, said at least 600 families had been targeted for assistance.

Ms Natawake said the 14 members of the club visited families in the Sigatoka area first to kick-start their distribution phase.

“We visited Korotogo and Malevu Villages to help 25 families. Our COVID-19 food drive is primarily for the tourism and hospitality workers,” she said.

“To date, we have donated more than 100 hampers. We have an ambitious target of some 600 families to see, but anything above that is a blessing and would be a bonus for us.”

She said the distribution of the food hampers were funded by the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney.

“We will continue to work with their grant funding for the next couple of months,” she said.

The club is also working with the Lautoka Ratepayers Association identify families who need the assistance.
