Government employees based at Nukuni Village in Ono-i-Lau sought forgiveness (matanigasau) from Eliki Yaco’s family last week.

This was after Mr Yaco went missing after he went to pick up a Government worker from a picnic spot at Mana Island.

It is alleged that Mr Yaco was bitten by a shark.

District representative of Ono-i-Lau, Eliesa Tavutu, 23, confirmed that more than 10 individuals presented yaqona to Mr Yaco’s family.

“The Government workers in the village went to ask forgiveness from the family of Eliki Yaco, led by pastor Ananaiasa Cokanauto,” Mr Tavutu said.

“They did this because there was a lot of tension in the village and the law will take its own course.

“They did it because one of the two who Eliki went to pick up from Mana island, picnic spot, is a Government worker.”

Mr Yaco went missing on May 31, 2020 after he went to pick up two people from the picnic spot.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said two people have been questioned and released in regards to the disappearance of Mr Yaco.

Mr Tavutu said the two who Eliki went to pick up had to be relocated to another village for their safety.
