Nabua man Jone Vakarisi has been remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court in Suva on fresh charges.

Appearing before Suva Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara yesterday, Vakarisi is charged with:

  • Three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm,
  • One count of intent to cause grievous harm,
  • One count of breach of bail conditions and one count of breach of a suspended sentence.

It is alleged that Vakarisi committed the alleged offences between May 29 to June 5 in Nabua.

The complainant in the matter is his 28-year-old wife.

Magistrate Wickramasekara said bearing in mind the seriousness of charges laid against the accused and that he had allegedly reoffended while serving a suspended sentence, the court refused to grant him bail.

Vakarisi was informed he was allowed to choose for the matter to be heard in the Magistrate Court or High Court.

He preferred having the matter heard before the High Court.

Vakarisi opted for Legal Aid representation in the matter.

He has been given 21 days to file a notice of alibi if he wishes to challenge the charges.

The case was transferred to the High Court in Suva and will be called on June 19.
